Kolkata Kali Puja

(Oct) - Laxmi or Kali Puja Festivals Kolkata

KOLKATA (3) - GLENBURN TEA ESTATE (3) - KOLKATA (1) = 7 nights

India is always ready with surprises and also with something very substantial for a discerning traveller. Take for instance the culture and the heritage, out which festivals and celebrations are begotten from time to time.

Overview

Laxmi Puja of Kolkata India is an important occasion, in which prayers are offered to Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, peace and prosperity. The puja of Ma Laxmi gives an opportunity to people to invite the Goddess of luck and prosperity to their homes. One or two days before the celebration of the festivity of Laxmi puja, the local markets of Kolkata are beautifully decorated. The shops get flooded with the idols of Laxmi seated on a lotus.

Two weeks after the celebration of Laxmi puja. Kali puja is performed in the honour of Kali, the Goddess of destruction. People worship Goddess Kali with the belief that she will protect them from evils and symbolizes strength. Puja of Ma Kali is conducted at midnight on the day of the new moon in the month of Kartik. Kali Puja of Kolkata usually coincides with Diwali. It is celebrated with splendid grandeur. People light candles, burst crackers, dress up in good clothes and offer prayers to mother Goddess Kali.

Kolkata is one of the most richly cultured cities of India. Be it music, art, drama, theatre, literature, folk art and the list goes on; the whole state breathes culture, so what better time to visit a place like this than the festival time in November! In this month the whole of Bengal celebrates the Kali Puja Festival. They worship the Goddess Kali, who is giver of courage to her children and the one who protects her children from the evil. All over the city in Kolkata you would find people dressed up to their best and ready towards the late evening to begin the rituals. It is a family time too when everybody exchanges sweets and pleasantries.

The entire city is exquisitely decked with lights and lamps that seem to light up the dark skies enhancing the beauty of the Bay. Your journey though doesn’t just give you the chance to enliven spirits in the Kali Puja celebrations, but takes you further to the peaceful mountain folds of Glenburn. Quite a contrast and a great one to add a different charm to this interesting journey of the East India!

The tranquillity, the simplicity and the picture perfect landscapes, grand Himalayas and the manicured tea estates all have an intriguing spell.
