Overview

If observed even randomly, one would be amused to find that in India every month one or the other part or state has some or the other festival or occasion to celebrate! The Dussehra festival is celebrated in the month of October every year. It is also called the Vijayadashmi or the tenth day of Victory of the good over evil.

The festival is celebrated with the worship of the Goddess; at times the festival also includes fasting. Mysore which is known for its gardens and the majestic palaces is also famous for the Dussehra celebration. In olden times, the royal family of the Wodeyars patronised and made this festival a grand affair with the subjects. Even today the Wodeyars make it a point to continue with the tradition and celebrate this festival in the people’s style!!

The entire city is generously decorated and illumined with lights, flowers and coloured pattern arrangements called the Rangoli. Several artists perform at the palace. You can also witness some interesting traditional sports, poet’s meet, film festival, theatre and also enjoy the typical Karnataka culinary delights especially the sweets and desserts!!

The cultural programmes held at the Mysore palace, the Jagan Mohan Palace, Kalamandir and the town hall, the sports and wrestling events, colourful procession of Goddess Chamundeshwari, torchlight parade and fireworks at Bannimantap and exhibition mark the main attractions of Dussehra. Basically, Navarathri is a feast of mother Goddess worshipped in different names and forms such as - mahakali, mahishasura mardhini, chamundi, kali, durga, raktadanti, shakambari and brahmani.

It is a state festival that still and will always attract tourists and the natives, enwrapping all in the spirit of joy and harmony.
