DELHI (1) - JAIPUR (3) - PUSHKAR CAMEL FAIR (2) - JODHPUR (2) - DELHI (1) = 9 nights
This is perhaps, to westerners, one of India's most famous fairs, held every year in the month of November. Pushkar fair is the ideal occasion to witness the charisma of Rajasthan in full bloom.
Everything that makes Rajasthan a distinct place can be spotted in the fair including men dressed in colourful traditional clothes, women in mirrored skirts and vivid shawls, embroidered clothes, exquisitely designed jewellery, pots and ornaments.
One of the holiest towns of India, Pushkar is known to be the only temple of the Divine Creator, Lord Brahma, it has over 400 temples and about 52 bathing ghats.
This ancient and busy town traces its roots and references to the holy ancient scriptures and revered and visited by thousands of devotees all over the year. It is a favourite not just for the religious reasons but also for another annual affair , and that is the internationally famous camel fair; which is held every year for five days in the month of October. It is known as the largest exchange ground of livestock, cattle and the favourite camels.
It feels as if suddenly in between the religious rituals and formalities there is a sudden burst of colours and activities. People from all over Rajasthan come with their cattle and the fully decorated camels for sale and purchase. The camels are cleaned and decked up in a special way with ankle bells and neck pieces; after all they also compete for their master’s fashion sense in the competitions. There is a variety of competitions right from camel races to camel parades etc. Tattoo lovers have a blast here with the traditional tattoo artists showcasing their talent here.
There are silversmiths, block printers and tarot readers strewn all over the fair. Traditionally, Indian fairs are of busy, noisy, crowded and colourful and happening kinds so the main attraction though is the camel, there is lot more that happens in this lakeside town of Pushkar. So either you walk around rather meander through the curious native crowd or could even opt for a ‘camel’s eye view’ riding through on a camel in the fair!!
Your tour takes you to Jodhpur later, where you get a different flavour after a rather busy time in the camel fair!
