Hampi Festival

(Jan) - Hampi Festival

MUMBAI (1) - HAMPI (4) - MUMBAI (1) = 6 nights

Every year the ruined city of Hampi plays host to a festival of dance and music, known as the Hampi Festival or Vijaya Utsav of Karnataka.

Overview

This time period sees the otherwise desolate city, brimming with enthusiastic people who come to enjoy the open-air environment of the celebrations. 2012 is the 500th anniversary of Sri Krishnadevaraya ascending the throne.

Visiting Hampi during this three day festival is like reliving the Golden Era of the Vijaynagar Empire, in this beautiful cultural state of Karnataka. It is a celebration and jubilation of the once rich and flourishing Empire that talked of nothing less than diamonds and gold!!

There are several eye catching events taking place here. There was once a very interesting event that took place here in the olden times, when the king was weighed against gold and money and then the amount was distributed among the poor and the needy. Such anecdotes at time awaken the child inside and one feels like using the time machine to capture such things in the handycam!!! Renowned musicians and dancers perform in the five chosen and artistically decorated venues.

The magnificent ruins of Hampi come alive with festive fervour for these three days. Apart from the music and dance performances there are stalls of traditional cuisine, handicrafts and even leather puppets to admire. One of the remarkable spectacle is the Raj Marga, or the Royal Path which is beautifully posted with decked elephants and men dressed like traditional military on this road. It is one of the features that walks straight out of the colourful pages of history! The festival though lasts only for three days gives a sumptuous treat for a music and art lover or even an enthusiastic traveller.

The tour then winds up back from where it started in Mumbai.
