Walking & trekking destinations in India can be divided into two major areas: The North Western Himalayas covering the states of Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Then on the far Eastern side of India the Himalayas and foothills covering the Darjeeling region of West Bengal and Sikkim.

For Indians, the mountains signify not only the natural beauty of nature but also a source of spiritual guidance. In India trekking gained popularity due to religion as it is believed that the loftiness and beauty of the Himalaya that this is where gods reside. 

During your meanders you get to pass through jungles, valleys, meadows, mountain villages, lakes and wildlife parks. Walks and treks in the foothills of India and the high altitude regions of the Himalayas not only gets you up close with nature, but you also get to interact with locals who have been living in these mountain villages for years. 

The most important thing to remember when walking in the hills and valleys is that you abide by the principles of responsible tourism. Make sure that you do not disturb nature or do any harm to the environment. Take away some wonderful memories but leave only footprints.
