There are only 3 metre-gauge mountain railway left in operation in India, Kalka to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, from New Jalpaiguri (from Kurseong until further notice) to Darjeeling in West Bengal and Mettupalayam to Ooty in Tamil Nadu.
These old heritage lines are slow and can take hours to reach their destinations but the mountain scenery is so beautiful, making the journey by this means of transport is really worthwhile.
To Darjeeling
In the North East of India above Kolkata lays the hill station of Darjeeling. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) climbs up the mountains from New Jalpaiguri (from Kurseong until further notice) to Darjeeling through a route of about 88kms. Work on the line started 1879 and opened for service on the 4th July 1881.
To Shimla
Shimla is very well known to the western traveller as the little hill station made famous by the British Raj who used to run the country from here during the summer months. The mountain railway here was initially sketched out by a correspondent of the Delhi Gazette in 1847. The railway line was completed in 1903.
To Ooty
The metre-gauge line starts from the railway junction in the small town of Mettupalayam at the foot of the mountains and travels 48 kms up to Ooty passing Coonoor en route.
To Matheran
There is a further train journey to a hill station that is not very well known to the western tourist called Matheran in Maharashtra. This line operates the narrow-gauge system. Lord Elphinstone the governor of Bombay visited Matheran in 1855 and chose a site for his bungalow still known as Elphinstone Lodge. His patronage made Matheran a popular hill resort. The mountain railway opened in 1907. Matheran is a popular getaway for those living in Mumbai.
